Very entertaining with an exellent British cast and enough good humour and excitement to keep most people happily amused for hours. Thoroughly recommended to all lovers of Dickens and his works!

Although this is often informative & entertaining over all it is disappointment. At the centre is Roy Dotice in a tour de force double performance as Charles Dickens and his father John Dickens. John Dickens was famously the model/inspiration for Mr Micawber and for this interpretation. Roy Dotrice seems to enjoy playing Papa far more than the author himself and once the senior Dickens is dead the series winds up very quickly. Generally the pace is slow but it does speed up towards the end sadly at the expense of the facts. Diana Coupland scores highly as Dicken's mother, gradually coming to find Maderia Wine more reliable than her wastral husband. Roy's daughter Karen Dotrice pops up and looks pretty (yes she was in Mary Poppins). There is a great series to be made about the life of Charles Dickens (as the movie The Invisible Woman proves) unfortunatly this is not it. A good adaptation of David Copperfield will tell you more.Read full review
