As a student of military history and the Vietnam War in particular, Michael Herr's Dispatches is as John Le Carre states on the cover of the 1978 paperback edition, "possibly the finest book on men and war I have read". I still have my well worn and often read paperback copy from 1978 and to find that a special hardback version, excellently bound and with additional information was all I needed to purchase this work. While not a definitive work of historical accuracy, this is a wonderful first person narrative told from the viewpoint of a respected journalist, who reports and reflects the realities of the war from a 'grunts' perspective. Two chapters deal exclusively with the Battles of Hue and Khe Sanh during the Communist 1968 TET Offensive. While there are historical errors apparent, I found the writing and the prose eloquent and evocative of the time. I have almost 100 books on the Vietnam War, including history, first person accounts and novels. Dispatches is in my top three.Read full review
