Donna Leon has matured greatly as a novelist since the early Brunetti books. This latest story illustrates her increasing interest and concern about ecological issues. But it's no dull tract. It's a wonderfully written and subtle story. All the usual elements are there: Brunetti's life at home and work for instance, with a change of setting to an island in the lagoon, where he is "convalescing". Besides the story itself, compelling from the first, there are wonderful descriptions of wildlife and rowing on the lagoon, especially when Brunetti is caught in an Apocalyptic thunder storm which never reaches Paola in Venice. The hero finally unravels the mystery, but is powerless to change anything or see justice done, as he would destroy the lives of those he has been investigating, already scarred, literally, by their experiences. Not a reassuring read, perhaps, but one to make you think.Read full review
