A clear and concise treatment of this subject that should enjoy wider readership. The book is clearly set out and well referenced. It is a textbook, so is not filled with anecdotes from either the colonisers or colonised. If you want a "gripe book", this isn't it as it takes a dispassionate approach to issues rather than making much of colonial abuses. Some readers may like this approach useful, others may find it unsympathetic; take your pick! The book is an ideal introduction, albeit, owing to its publication date is not completely at the forefront of the subject and owing to its brevity is far from exhaustive. However, it references larger works, some of which have been produced in more recent editions. Ths style remains a model of clarity. The book clearly shows how varied the experience of decolonisation was from country to country. The reasons for this are clearly set out. The folly of a "one size fits all" approach to how colonialism ended is as false and foolish as such an approach to colonialism itself.Read full review
