Oh dear. This adaptation of John Cleland's book barely falls short of gratuitous porn. I know I'm going to merely encourage some people to Buy It Now, but at least it might serve as a warning to any fans of costume dramas who, like me, unwittingly thought their purchase would be as innocent as Mary Poppins. Of course, it was written by a bloke who, it seems, was trying to address feminist issues concerning women throughout history having to sacrifice their, erm, virtue, in order to survive. The title alone is an obvious attempt at irony, from the heroine's name, which does about as much for feminism as Katie Price does. A woman named after the means by which she survives, and her inherent, er, 'uphill' way to the top. Sally Head,(the producer) you should be ashamed of yourself! Unfortunately, since it was directed by a man, this means that as much naked womanhood is on display as possible, and, as double standards are, hardly any men have to reveal much of their bodies at all. So, the entire film contradicts itself, since any attempts to address feminism are undermined by directional liberties with the female cast. And as for the smutty euphamisms; they just render the film tacky. The narration shots of the heroine are annoying for the same reason. But of course, a quasi-porn film is going to have a wider appeal than one that might have actually been suitable, and even useful, for educating people. So history hasn't changed. A costume drama without the costumes; written, directed and produced by a bunch of mysogynists. I suppose the only use this adaptation has (apart from the obvious) is a lesson on how NOT to make an egalitarian film.Read full review
Set in a decodant past time, this film looks at a young girl making her fortune through both her beauty and amicable nature. The film includes extravagent costumes, erotic adventures, and an unrivaled cast whose performances are both heartwariming and daring. Rebecca Knight triumphs as the lead in this highly entertaining drama that examines the perverted natures of both powerfull men and willfull woman.
