  • Excellent Jazz Lead Guitar Improvisation Primer

If you're interested in learning Jazz lead guitar (and you've been playing guitar for a while and know your Jazz chords, their inversions and voicings, as well as your Drop 2 shapes and so on), this book starts off the scales associated with each chord such as C Dorian over Cm7, etc. It then introduces the arpeggios you need to know to join up your solos as you play over the *ahem* changes, making them sound musical rather than running scales. After that, some Blues scale theory and further examples then you've got a fair number of "In the style of.." solos to learn for the rest of the book. The guitarists paid tribute to here include Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall and Charlie Christian - old school Jazzers. No modern guys like Mike Stern or Pat Metheny, for example, but then again, guys like that cut their teeth on the likes of Joe Pass and Wes Montgomery anyway! If you're a Classic rock/Blues dude like me and Jazz lead guitar solos leave you scratching your head then this is a very good book to start from. 10/10
