Fantastic book about the intricacies of F1. Somewhat dated now, but as an introduction to the sport, especially for younger readers, it's fab!

I first became interested in Formula One in 1995, back in the days when full length races were still being beamed into our living rooms courtesy of the BBC. Looking back on it now, it seems that I was in the right place at the right time on that fateful afternoon. Needing something to do to pass the time of day, I turned on the TV, tuned into a Formula One race and, quite unexpectedly, became completely mesmerised by it’s hypnotic rhythm. Time seemed to pass more quickly than David Coulthard in his Williams Renault. It was on that day that the ‘madness’ started. I developed an insatiable appetite for knowledge about the teams, drivers and race tracks involved in the whole process. I was looking for the answer to questions. Questions which could have been answered by the Renault Formula One Racing Book, if I had only known of it’s existence at the time… “Everyone will learn something from this book.” Williams Team Principal Sir Frank Williams made a bold statement in his introduction to this book; however it is one backed up with, perhaps one of the most informative books on the subject I have ever encountered. As someone who takes great pleasure in adding to my, ever increasing, collection of books on F1, it was during a recent eBay search that this book came to my attention. At first I was slightly concerned that this was just an official product aimed at the casual observer. It turns out that my concerns were completely unfounded. Now, don’t get me wrong, this one is not purely for the ‘heads’. This would be an ideal starting point for the casual observer to find out more about the sport. A prelude written by the team bosses of Benetton and Williams – the two teams continuing there battle for dominancy in the ’95 World Championship – whets the appetite for what is to follow. We have detailed descriptions of the various stages of the birth of a formula one car – from the types of materials used, through to the engine, tyres, and types of people involved during construction. We also have information about the founding members of iconic teams such as Ferrari, McLaren and Williams. All this and more is accompanied by superb illustrations and photography, making this a great coffee table piece too. It’s easy to imagine someone who may have no interest in F1, picking up this book and finding something of interest. There’s even sections which draw comparisons between road cars and F1 cars as well as a breakdown of the composite layers of a motorway surface compared against a race track. For anyone looking for some ammunition ahead of a quiz night down at their local pub, there are some great facts in there too, including a list of the circuits used at the time and their geographical location; as well as a list of all the Formula One World Champions. From facts and figures about life in the pit lane, to more obscure gems and curios - such as the driving style of Jean Alesi; or a list of some of the drivers who wear glasses – it’s slender frame belies a book that contains a incredible depth of information. It seems somewhat fitting that in a sport that is about the relentless quest to find ways to go faster, that nothing in F1 really stands still. The technology of ’95 – cutting edge at the time – has long since been rendered obsolete. However, having said that, the Renault Formula 1 Motor Racing Book provides a snap shot of a moment in time that, for me, was part of the golden era of Formula One.Read full review
