A superb drama about a young woman who assists her friend to arrange an illegal abortion in 1980's communist Romania. In the brutal Ceausescu communist regime birth control is illegal and abortion is a crime punishable by death. Gabita is five months into an unwanted pregnancy and in desperation turns to her friend and roommate, Otilia for help in organizing an illegal termination. Unfortunate circumstances force the two women to use a male abortionist, Bebe, who, in addition to an absurd amount of money, also demands sex with both women as payment. The bleakness of the storyline expresses a dark socio-political critique in the twilight years of a repressive dictatorship. An amazing & intelligent film - this is not an anti-abortion film. There is no political statement. It is just a daily life of a few Romanians during the period and you can feel it through this film. It's a film that will make you feel like a human being again and after seeing it you will surely think much better about Romanian cinematography. The spartan and minimalist style of the film only adds to its potency. Though many might find it jarring to sit through, I can only hope that people will have the patience and resolve to watch this brilliant example of movie making. If you invest your time and emotions in this one, you will not be disappointed. Well recommended to all.Read full review
