The trusty G5RV antenna is an antenna that people are either going to love or hate. You'll hear many people saying that they are good and others saying they are bad. My experience has been a good one. Simply put, it's an antenna that's never going to break any records, but it wild the job. It will never do things brilliantly but it does work. For example, on 80m using the full size (102ft) I found that it was down by approximately 2 S points over my dedicated 80m doublet. Not bad really and the important thing here is that people could still hear me and I could still hear them. Overall, it's a well made antenna but remember the golden rule here: the higher the better! Having the open wire feeder trailing along the ground will seriously compromise the performance. The OWF needs to be as straight as possible as this is also a radiating part of the antenna. They do work - without question and are an excellent introduction to HF antennas in general.Read full review

A good strong yet light weight antenna. Excellent SWR ON 80,40,20 band. Well made. Diagram Instructions for the uninitiated could be a bit more detailed. Previous review encouraged strengthening ladder line to Balun connection which I did with extra electrical tape as a precaution. Very pleased with it.

I have this antenna mounted on a 10m fibreglass flag pole. I haven't used the top two extensions. The antenna has been up in winds in excess of 40mph and the wind load has barely bent the pole. The antenna will tune on all bands from 80m to 6m using the internal tuner on my Icom radio. The SWR is 10:1 on top band which is to much for the internal tuner. I have made some great contacts. The best so far is VK on 20m using 100mw of power on WSPR. I'm able to reach all of Europe and East coast of the US every day on various bands. This is now my default antenna for digital modes. If you want to see how it is performing put my callsign (G7IWV) into PSK reporter. I never run more than 20W on digital.
