Chailly has a real feel for Gershwin, despite occasional missteps (his earlier, wonderful "American in Paris" makes unfortunate use of swing eighth notes in one section, a stylistic device that wouldn't come into general use until several years later). Combining forces with Stefano Bollani, a superb jazz musician, results in immaculate performances that feel just right. Bollani improvises his own cadenzas, and while this comes as a surprise it also helps impart a true jazz feel to the proceedings. Finally, the suite from "Porgy and Bess" makes it clear that Chailly knows exactly what he's doing, a blessing for us all.
