I read this book in paperback several years ago. When I saw the chance to get it in hard for this low price I had to take it. I always admired Orwell and this book reinforced that. It wasn't a difficult read and didn't try to make complexity of it's subject. It read very much as a story rather than biography (which can be a turgid form) and Michael Sheldon is to be congratulated. Orwell was a man who practised what he preached: his descriptions in 'The Road to Wigan Pier' are grapically realised. Until I read this book I never realised that his enemy in the Spanish Civil War turned out to be the 'hard' left on the side for which he thought he was fighting. Animal Farm and 1984 are his masterpieces but given relatively little space in the book. I liked that as a corrective to those who think he was defined by those two alone. Having said that, in my opinion, they are two of the best books written in the English Language and in '1984' so prophetic it beggars belief. This is certainly one of the best biographical works I have read and would wholeheartedly recommend it.Read full review
