This, like most japanese films, is a wholly different experience from watching a Hollywood film. It's steeped in Samurai culture and the backdrop of 19th century Japan, but it says much for the quality of the artistry that it's still a film that Western people with their European and American cultural background can enjoy. The story is simple yet beguiling and the acting, especially the character of Kano, is terrific. And the photography is utterly beautiful in certain key scenes, especially the ending.
