This film is flawed - yet like the original book's author those flaws cannot hide the sheer brilliance of the work. There are so many things to like - the famous opening sequence on the Kent marshes, the nightime capture of the fleeing convicts, Miss Havisham and her command that Estella "beggar" Pip, all the way through to Magwich's failed attempt to flee England - all these plus great performances from those in both large and small roles help make this a marvellous entertainment. Above all, though, the cinematography that effortlessly evokes mid 19th century London and Kent. Yes, flawed - but what work of true greatness isn't? After all, being flawed is the essence of being alive. And this film is certainly alive.
A timeless classic! David Lean was a bloody genius. The fact that it's black and white only enhances the experience. Great cast too!
