The HP Compaq Elite 8300 is a little long in the tooth now, but can still compete effectively. It is very compact, very quiet, and is beautifully built: it is an absolute breeze servicing/changing components etc. all the drive bays, power supply etc. just fold out - no screwdrivers required! I changed the 500GB hard disk for a Samsung SSD and it's now even nippier. Those wanting an overtly powerful, easily hackable/expandable/tweakable PC for gaming might be disappointed; but for the majority of PC users it's perfect. Even so, it will take an AMD HD7450 graphics card as an upgrade (approved by HP), which makes a big difference to the graphics handling. As a professional user doing a wide range of tasks I have no complaints whatsoever - and for the price that you can pick one up for these days it's almost a no-brainer.Read full review

A business PC with an i5 processor I honestly thought that this would whizz through applications etc. The first day of using a second hand PC, I might as well fire up my ZX Spectrum, that seems to be a lot faster than this is. I have a basic 4 gig installed and a 500 gig hard drive. I might upgrade to 8 gigs of ram and also a SSD drive to improve the speed, which in turn costs money upon money from buying this. I done a factory restore so really, this should have chose the best settings for the PC, but installing office has taken about 30 minutes, Loading up Chrome takes minutes instead of seconds, I could go on, but for the money, this really is a shocking PC. I now why I advise people to never buy HP or Dell products, my neighbour has a HP beats audio and that is the same. I have since installed an SSD drive in this and it has made the computer much faster. Please be aware that you can only use a 2 TB hard drive or a 300 gig SSD. Anything above that and it will not work. Installation of the drive was very easy, and just lifting off the panel and removing the cage. I attached the SSD card without a hard drive cage and it is sturdy attached to the connectors.Read full review

A fast i5 machine with plenty of expansion slots and onboard USB3.0. There are a couple of full size PCI-E slots plus some 1x slots and three vacant RAM slots. Loads of drive bays and a DVD writer. Add a graphics card and you have a decent workhorse computer for productivity or gaming. The PSU is 320w so stick to an Nvidia Maxwell based card (GTX750Ti is perfect). There are no molex connectors for older kit but several spare SATA power connections. The mainboard is HPs own but there are no oddball connectors or anything silly - it's all standard. Mine came with Windows 7 64 bit Professional and upgraded itself just fine to Windows 10.
