I love this version of Hamlet and find the language of Shakespeare more intelligible because of the acting. Not sure my kids would agree... but I really enjoyed it.

I had to study Hamlet in English Literature class at school and found it rather dry at the time. I bought the film version because I wanted to see if the text could be given a bit more life. English has changed so much in the 400+ years since Shakespeare's time that his wording is sometimes hard to understand. However, some of the observations of human nature and existence raised in this play are timeless. The film is close enough to the original play so as not to disappoint the purists, but moves at a fast enough pace to hold the attention of a modern-day viewer. Mel Gibson and Glenn Close both do star turns as Hamlet and his mother, and the supporting cast is generally strong. The location, costume and props are all impressive. If you want to see one of Shakespeare's most important plays and don't want to go to the theatre, this is an excellent substitute.Read full review
