Made on a shoe-string budget back in 1986 and banned by the BBFC for some time, this grim film follows the empty life of nomadic socio-psychopath Henry (Michael Rooker). Based on the real-life confessions (and not actual crimes)of American killer Henry Lee Lucas, there are multiple murders, each of them equally uncomfortable to watch. However, given its dark and grisly look, it will possibly be enjoyed by those into the slasher-horror genre, although I personally found this a very disturbing film because of it's reality-TV like quality enhanced by lack of actors none of whom I would say were well-known. What is equally disturbing is the relentless violence from the main character. We're brought into Henry's dark world, and there's no escape or distraction. The plot basically follows Henry going about his business which isn't much besides unprovoked random murders. He's then joined by his to-be accomplice and old prison chum Otis (Tom Towles) and Otis' younger sister Becky (Tracy Arnold). Although Becky is left out of the murderous spree Otis and Henry continue to murder together. Some hardcore horror fans may be disappointed because although we see plenty of corpses, very little is shown of the actual act of the murders. To me, this power of suggestion was more disturbing than an off-putting gore fest. This is a film that's depressing, melancholic and shows the very dark side of human beings, which makes it uncomfortable viewing. There is no positive ending. However, this is exactly how a serial killers life should be portrayed and this film does a fine job of showing the emptiness, pointlessness and lack of empathy from such people.Read full review
