This,as cool as ice film directed by Chris Wedge and Carlos Saldanha is yet another film which utilizes the wonderful technology of Computer generated imagery. It seems that with the release of so many of these animated films that the new digitized cartoons are a form whose time has come. The time period is the dawn of Man.The dinosaurs have long since vanished from the Earth, and an Ice Age is fast approaching. The animals,at least most of them, are headed south for the long, hard winter. Among the exceptions are the industrious, frustrated squirrel, and three larger mammals:Manfred the Mammoth,Sid the Sloth and Diego the Sabertooth Cat.These three have banded together on an unlikely quest:to return a lost human baby to his tribe. However, while Manfred and Sid have the best intentions,Diego is pursuing his own agenda,a very sinister agenda.... I was tempted to rate this film 3/5 because it lacks the fit and finish of top-of-the-line films from Pixar,DreamWorks and Disney. However the company that produced this (Blue Sky) are relatively new on the block so its an impressive piece of work from a new feature animation group.Kids wont mind at all, they'll love it but adults accustomed to great animated films like Shrek and other Pixar outings will have no trouble spotting what's missing. Whilst Ice Age never matches the brilliance of Toy Story or the heartfelt heft of Shrek,it's an antic and sweet-spirited pleasure. Its an incredibly funny film and will have children and adults alike in stitches. The rat like squirrel named Scrat is without a doubt the funniest character in this film as he tries to bury his beloved acorn with disastrous effects.Sid the sloth is also side-splittingly funny and Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond) does an excellent job of voicing the laid back Mammoth named Manfred. You would be crazy not to rent or buy this film as,although it does not reach the heights of Toy Story and lacks the depth of Shrek there is still much fun to be had from this. I really liked the first Ice Age outing but lost first DVD we bought. Got the extreme edition and the feature on the second disc is great! You can watch the film like a Blue Ray film with the special features on. As have not got blu-ray it was a novelty, but really enjoyable. The film itself is really good fun and the characters were really well written and performed to a T! John Leguizamo is a really under rated talent! I really recommend watching this even if your an adult with a young at heart approach!
Excellent film .... one of those that you can watch over and over again Definately not just for kids - great for big kids too and a lot of adult humour jokes in it. Real good family film ....... great for when you need an easy going film and a real good laugh Also bit educational too for kids learning about the Ice age Fantastic characters in it and I can guarantee that you will fall in love with "Sid" !!!
Ice Age is a funny, all round family film. I'd seen the film a couple of times but never got round to buying it. As I am getting Ice Age 2 - 2 disc special edition for Christmas, I decided it was time to get the 1st film on dvd. I always go for special editions for the extras that are included.
