I bought Infinite Jest because of the hype but it turned out to be the emperor’s new clothes. Some of the subject matter is interesting but there are so many over-long, unwieldy sentences with inadequate punctuation. I found myself re-reading and re-re-reading them to try to unravel their meaning. With long sections of dialogue, it was a struggle to attribute speech to one character or another because there is no ‘said Hal’ or ‘said Mario’. The book appears to have bypassed the editing stage and gone straight to print, including 97 pages of notes and errata (why not just correct the errors within the text of the novel?). It is a long book – 981 pages of small, densely packed text. I endured 82 pages before giving up. Infinite? seemingly. Jest? Not for me.

I bought this because DFW is acclaimed as a literary genius. I have read many many novels and most of the well-reviewed books. But my basic requirement is engagement. If I'm not engaged by a compelling narrative and characters who intrigue, there's no reason to turn the page. This quickly started to feel like an irksome task so for me, a waste of money. The moment I stop reading is when I become aware that I couldn't care less about the content!. Also, the print was too small which makes a huge opus even more daunting.
