In amongst an steady flow of live concert DVD's in recent years, Iron Maiden have managed here to deliver something that should appeal to any fan whether newly found or a long term admirer, delivering rare concert footage and the defintive history from the formation of the band through to 1983. The concert footage kicks off with the long since deleted VHS release Live At The Rainbow, with Paul Di'Anno on vocals it shows the band on top form delivering a spiky performance. The Beast Over Hammersmith footage was filmed in 1982 for a mooted video release but shelved due to poor picture quality, which is more than apparent here, but even so it amply demonstrates the huge leap forward Maiden had taken forward in such a short time after the arrival of Bruce Dickinson. The footage from the Dortmund Heavy Metal festival of 1983 was filmed by German TV and never officially available in Britain. Coming at the conclusion of the World Piece Tour their is a slight end of term feel to the band's performance but the music still hits home hard. A fair bit of the live footage was available on the First 10 Years video from the late 1980's, which also attempted a retrospective. On The Early Days however you get a far more comprehensive tour of the past featuring pretty much anyone who ever had anything to do with the band - no mean feat considering the high turnover of members in the late 70's. Even for anyone familiar with the story, this section proves extremely interesting. Then there is the bonus footage from their old stomping ground, the Ruskin Arms in London. Shot on a single handheld camcorder the sound and quality are naturally of a low quality but even so, as a timepiece and a curio it is a treat to see them commanding the stage even then. Further DVD's are promised in this series, though they may lack the impact of this one given that latter day concert footage is far more widely available. Part 1 - The Early Days has certainly set a high standard for the next instalment to try and match.Read full review
Maiden at there best, first off all three gigs are in high quality considering that they were filmed over 20 years ago. They band play very well and seem to be on top form. If you prefer more heavier/earlier Iron Maiden music this is the dvd for you. Also if you are interested in the history of Iron Maiden this contains plenty of it.
I can still remember hearing Maiden as a 10 year old way back in '79 and being totally blown away by what I saw and heard, from then on they became a part of growing up. They were the first band I ever saw live and of course I've seen them many times since. I became a bass player mainly down to the fact that Steve Harris was so inspirational to hear and watch and look back at all those years with great affection. If any of this sounds familiar to you or if you've ever played in a band or you just want to hear a story of success against the odds then this DVD is for you. Packed with great interviews of all the main players in Maiden's past and with some great footage along the way. Excellent.
If your a fan of hard rock/heavy metal and love Iron Maiden, this is for you, find out the story behind one of the worlds biggest bands. Right from the beginning this details the rise from a pub band and various line up changes until 1983. Disc 1 contains the bands first 3 concerts ever recorded which are well worth listening to with the volume turned right up! Disc 2 contains the 90 minute documentary and all the promo videos up to 1983. Well worth a look this is a brilliant DVD!
