After their parents are killed and their home destroyed in a mysterious fire, the Baudelaire orphans are embarked on a series of adventures, shadowed all the while by their mischeivous 'actor' uncle, Count Olaf who has designs on their inheritance. It soon becomes clear that he will stop at nothing and nobody to gain his hands on this wealth and it will take all of the children's inventiveness and ingenuity to foil Olaf's evil machinations. Jim Carrey is absolutely superb in this film and reminds you why he is such a great comic actor - hamming it up to his heart's content. A film which owes a lot in tone to the movies of Tim Burton, this film is as much for adults as it is for children. Made from the first three books in the Lemony Snicket collection, i for one would love to see some sequels. A great buy in my opinion.Read full review
This is a family movie that doesn't patronise the family by being sickly sweet. In fact it's rather dark and sinister, but it's never frightening. I have 5 year olds who love this movie and it's fine because I like this movie too. There is a brilliant sense of the absurd (Just wait till you see the house built on the cliff edge) and an intelligent plot. On top of this there are some quite brilliant performances from Jim Carrey, Meryl Streep, Billy Connelly and Timothy Spall (not to mention a cameo by Dustin Hoffman). Like the Harry Potter movies this gives these very reputable actor a chance to ham it up. But they are never as interesting as the child stars. If you've seen Tim Burtons 'Sleepy Hollow' you will appreciate the gothic look of the costumes and sets. It all screams quality. The only down side is that this too should have been a series of movies. I believe there are 13 novels to tell this tale where this movie is made out of the first three books and ties the whole story up neatly. What a shame I'd have looked forward to at least 2 more of these continuing the adventures of the children pitting their not inconsiderable wit against Count Olaf.Read full review
I bought the product because it is one of my favourite films, and this 2 disc set DVD also gave plenty of special features about the making of etc. I think the product deserves an excellent rating as it is a brilliant film and has loads of extra features, interviews, galleries, easter eggs etc. There isnt anything that I dislike about this product.
