After having read the book, I was looking forward to seeing the film. It was absolutely fantastic. I haven't enjoyed a film so much in years. You cry, you laugh, and then your crying again. It was such a poignant film about the relationship between a mother and son, and her little foibles (habits) as her mind deteriates with a series of strokes, until her death. When she has the strokes, it is so heartwrenching, then when she recovers from them, she loses ability to remember the names of things. The love between son and mother knows no bounds, and he would no sooner be home from a visit, then he would be rushing back again. The choice of actors for this film I feel could not be matched by any others. Thora Hird, who plays the mother, was the finest actress of her time, and I'm not sure if it was her last, but she certainly went out on a high if it was. Pete Postlethwaite plays the son, which is of course, is the author Deric Longden. This is his autobiographical story of his mother and at times it is so heartbreaking. He plays the part with so much warmth, that this must rate as one of his finest also. If anyone gets a chance to read the book, then you'll understand that it would be an honour to get a chance to do the film. Read all his books if you can. I promise you that you'll never have had laughed so much before. Though with this one, you cry just as much. Fantastic!Read full review
I truely was lost for words, the first time I saw this film. I have been a fan of Deric Longden for years, enjoying, reading and re-reading his books about Thermal (his cat) and his friends. His wit and expressive writing method shines through in his book and in this film. In this film, we sneak a peek into his life with his wife and also his beloved Mother, played wonderfully by the late Dame Thora Hird (Not to mention Whisky the cat - that cat deserves an oscar for his performance! - which is even funnier in the book!). The film is a true reflection of the book (which is also highly recommended) - its laugh out loud funny, and lump in the throat sad at the same time, you will cry tears of sadness and happiness. A real must for Longden fans everwhere, and for anyone who has learned to see the funny side of the odd, slightly out of the ordinary relative!. Look out for the real life voice of Deric in the film (he's the voice on the answerphone!).. . ... I will watch it over and over again....Read full review
