It painted a picture of a little known war, much like Europe, but very different due to the Japanese occupation having been ongoing for a long time. This "thriller" is 2 hours and 20 minutes long - it seems much longer. The "caution" of the title is much in evidence, with a plot that moves like a geriatric snail. Even near the beginning I started to doze off. There are good performances here and some decent drama with good photography and period feel. But thrillers need to thrill or at the very least maintain some tension.

For anybody who is interested in Chinese Culture, the Chinese Civil War, or the Second World War this film is a must watch. The film is absolutely fascinating, showing Hong Kong (香港) and Shanghai (上海) as it was during the war, contrasting exquisitely with the modern views of Shanghai and Hong Kong we see today. The story itself is a complex story of Betrayal, Espionage, Lust and Politics. The "Lust (色)" of the title may not be for the faint hearted, but it is not gratuitous it is integral to the story. Perhaps the most amazing cinematographically are the sequences of Mahjong (麻將). Even for those who dislike subtitled films this must be a winner, as so much of the story is told through the body language of the actors. In short a film that you really should watch.
