With the sun-baked menace of a small-screen Sexy Beast, the psychological four-part drama Mad Dogs looks as though it means business right from the word go – and not just because it boasts a well-known band of television actors. With an inviting script by Cris Cole and the crisp direction of Adrian Shergold, who has previously been involved with the excellent He Kills Coppers and Pierrepoint, it also promises a heck of lot more than the average British TV drama. Woody (Max Beesley), Quinn (Philip Glenister), Baxter (John Simm) and Rick (Marc Warren) are old school mates, turning 40, who arrive in Majorca to celebrate the retirement of another of their gang, Alvo (Ben Chaplin, left). Alvo appears to have it all – the sumptuous villa and the confidence of a man in possession of wads of cash – but it’s clear he has problems. As his manner veers from the over-familiar to the intimidating, he’s forever undermining the self-esteem of his pals and it’s soon clear that Alvo’s success is a deceit. Each of the visitors, meanwhile, has his own problems, both personal and professional, but as they get drawn deeper into Alvo’s dodgy world and their fate becomes clear, so their masks of respectability begin to slip. The skill here is in combining humour and horror, the plausible and the ridiculous, such as a dwarf assassin wearing a Tony Blair mask. So far, this drama manages the balancing act with both flair and wit.Read full review
Mad Dogs is a 4 part serial on one disc.Originaly made for T.V.Thus forming part 1.Lead charactors played by John Simm & Philip Glenister are well known to those who have watched Life on Mars. This time we go to Spain,Majorca i think. The scenery is beautiful.Very well written & so entertaining.Quality acting from all.Well worth buying. There is a part 2 already available to buy on dvd. With a part 3 not yet screened to follow.Which will be very interesting.
Watched on Sky and simply had to purchase a copy. Best drama series have seen in years. Make sure you see series 2 after.
Great story line and great performances from these popular British actors. Basically four lads go on holiday to see an old friend who is living the big life in an island of Spain, Majorca I think. everything is going on well until out of no where Tony Blair shoots one of them in the head. Then they have to go up against crooked cops, drug deals, Serbian mafia, a psychotic Spanish midget and a goat.
I missed Mad Dogs on TV and was anxious to view it as I think the actors involved are terrific. The whole plot just kept rolling along and I really enjoyed it. However, I have to agree that the ending started to get a little overworked and at times reminded me of Lord of the Flies but it looked like the actors had a real good time from start to finish and my viewing experience was all the richer for it.
