Absolutely superb sound from this amplifier. Beautifully clear upper range, clear and defined mids and smooth and deep bass. The first thing i used with the amplifier was a 1969 LP of Abbey Road by the Beatles. For a music source 50 years old the clarity to which the Marantz gave really brought the music alive - a wonderful experience. Since then i've used CD and a streaming network player as sources and these just sound out of this World! From the Marantz spec sheet i was wondering whether 60W RMS power was going to provide enough music power to fill my 6m x 4m living room. As the power supply in the Marantz is very linear and is superbly Engineered it drives my KEF 500 floorstanders so well i have rarely used it up and beyond the 50% volume mark - this amplifier provides more distortion-free music power than i have experienced with amplifiers rated at over 120W per channel. Bear in mind that back in 1998 or so this KI Signature version of the amplifier was retailing at £1,700 so you know you are getting a superbly designed product.Read full review

Wanted one of these way back in 1999 but could not afford the extra £600 for the modification at the time on top of the standard PM-17 of £1100. Wow!! was it worth waiting 17 years and get one at this price £595 and in an as "New" condition. Virtually no marks on the unit. The sound and presentation of the sound is both wide and deep. Bass well controlled, mid range and top so clear giving pinpoint accuracy on stage placement. Nothing wrong with the standard version but the mods do lift it way up the audiophile line. Most reviews give it a sound simular to but below that of a "Krell Kav 250a which costs £5500. So i am well pleased and would recommend this PM-17 Sig to anyone, but good hunting as not easy to find. Tim.

Had been lusting after one of these for some time. This replaced a pm7000, so it is a big step up in both sound and quality. The sound is quite divine. I paid more than I was hoping to pay but as a once in lifetime purchase I thought 'what the hell, it's only money'. I use it for vinyl- great phono preamp, CDs and DAB radio. I could not be more pleased.

I had that horrible urge to see what was up for sale on ebay & came across this little gem one evening. The starting bid was 250 & after a few vodkas I put a bid in but expected the unit to go up quite high in price, reading reviews of this unit on the net gave me the impression this was quite a highly regarded unit. Well... I won! the unit went for the starting bid & was promptly despatched. I gave the unit my usual anal clean & polish & it looks quite good apart from the odd light scratch. After it was gleeming in the sunlight I removed my Marantz PM7200KI & plumbed her in & fumbled hurridly through my CDs, the Eagles hell freezes over is always a good start :o). Wow, what amazing sound! absolutely stunning, detail at the top end which the PM7200 could not do at all. I decided a bit of vinyl was in order so Toto IV was popped onto the platter, the sound was a bit dry with neither defined bass or treble so I engaged the tone controls & the music died. Mystified I started inspecting the unit to see if I had missed something like a switch or jacks on the back or whether I had done something else wrong. Putting the unit back in to source direct & Rosanna appeared through the speakers once again, switched tone on & she disappeared! the tone controls would not work at all. Fuming I mailed the seller to complain, being so keen as I was on the amps blatant abilities in the sonic department I wasn`t really keen on asking for a refund & I negotiated a small percentage back to repair the unit which was the industry standard labour cost of about 40 pounds. The fault turned out to be the two leads which supplied + & - supplies to the tone PCB were unplugged. How this would occur in post I don`t know ( I was told all had been in good working order), the unit did look like it had been opened before so whether previous service work to it had been done & the technician forgot to plug this back in did cross my mind. Anyhows, I`ve got my tone controls back for some of my faded records, the temperature dial lights don`t work but that can be sorted some other time (blue LEDs instead perhaps?). At the time of bidding I was rather happy with my PM7200KI which was in mint condition, the sound was great but I always had to have the tone controls in circuit to get a bit of life out of it, I also loved the class A mode, the major downside to the PM7200 was it was not the most attractive machine to lay eyes on, unlike the PM17 which was an instant head turner! I was rather worried about my decision to buy the PM17 because I would have to sell the PM7200 thinking "what if its awful & I have to sell something I really like?" Fortunately I made the right decision & this is the best amplifier I have ever listened to, everything it does is so well executed, I could not have asked for more. If you get the opportunity to lay your paws on one of these units on the second hand market pounce on it because I doubt you will be dissapointed. I have told my partner that this is the last ever amp I buy, the next one I will build myself, the Marantz PM17 has finally satisfied me after numerous brands/models have been and gone. Buy this unit with confidence. Thanks for reading & I hope it was of some use to you :o) JodieRead full review
