For those of you who don't know, Meg and Mog began their lives as the central characters (along with Owl) in a series of children's books written by Jan Pienkowski and Helen Nicoll some time around the early 1980s. I certainly remember there being quite a few Meg and Mog books littered around the various bookcases threaded through the rooms and hallways of my primary school, and the stories are as great for younger children today as they were thirty or so years ago. I was prompted to purchase this particular DVD when a very special little girl (who is also in the room with me now, pretending that she is not intently watching me doing this) asked me about Meg and Mog. I don't think the TV series is as old as the books, maybe it only came out a few years back, I'm not sure, but the DVDs have simply adapted book stories into short audio scripts to make into voiceovers, over which they have mounted animation developed from the original illustration style of the books. Now, what's Meg and Mog actually about? Well, Meg is a benign and slightly scatterbrained solitary witch, and Mog is her grumpy and bad-tempered familiar in the shape of a bristly striped cat. From time to time is seen another familiar, Owl (who is, strangely enough, a snowy owl), and owl is wise and sedate and usually found trying to rein in Meg's impulsive notions or Mog's berserker-like blustering. The characters engage on a number of adventures, and despite the reputation of witches they show absolutely no sinister or evil intentions at any point during the course of those adventures. Pros and Cons: The series has little if any serious educational value, but it's fun, bright and totally inoffensive. If you are an 80s retro addict, a lover of kiddies' stories in general or else the proud owner of a small and beautiful child whom you love to hear laughing, then this is an excellent choice. The combination of Northern witch, Cockney cat and Oxford-educated owl causes great hilarity no matter what your age! I'd recommend this to anyone who loves either their little one or a bloody good laugh. Enjoy!Read full review
