Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: New
A favorite of mine, I did have it once and someone borrowed it,they must have liked it too because it still hasn't been returned! That must have been about a year ago so i bought myself another copy so we could both enjoy it!!
Until I bought my own copy of 'Northern Star,' I'd only remembered a couple of tracks from the radio and had a vaque memory of hearing my brother playing the album long ago. I'd thought this a bit strange at the time. My brother was very much into rock music and I would never have associated him listening to music by one of the Spice Girls. I thought Melanie C was the most talented Spice Girl and decided to buy a cheap copy of 'Northern Star' from a charity shop. Over the next few days I played it several times, along with 'Norfolk Coast' by The Stranglers. 'Northern Star' is surprisingly good with a range of moods and strong singing. I particularly like the first track, 'Go!' with a flute solo reminiscent of Jethro Tull and a strong drum beat and the other rock track 'Goin' Down' - with lyrics that would have been out of place on a Spice Girls track. Melanie C's singing is probably strongest in 'Why' and 'Closer,' with an incedibly high note being reached in the latter. If there is a weak track, it's probably 'Suddenly Monday', which is OK, but pales in contrast to the others. I also found the rhyme "I couldn't live without my phone. But you don't even have a phone" grating, although I can understand the sentiment about homelessness, but these are minor gripes considering the strength of the other songs. The two hit singles 'Never be the same again' and 'I turn to you' are also very strong and showed that Melanie C was a strong member of the Spice Girls and was also capable of developing very good solo materil. When my copy of the album went missing, I wanted to get a replacement as son as possible and e-bay had several cheap copies. I am happy with the replacement album, although I miss the extra tracks featuring the single versions of 'Never be the same again' and 'I turn to you'.Read full review
This cd is an excellent example of Melanie C at her very best. This reminds the listener of her talent that has been wasted recently. Her duet with Lisa Left Eye Lopez 'Never be the same again' is legendary. The song is imaginative and is a perfect example of Mel and Lisa at the height of their career. The song speaks volumes to people of my generation. The songs show Mel C's first-class independent style that has been missing lately. I would strongly recommend this song to any-one looking for an easy listening cd with a couple of dancy tunes.
Muchas gracias
