This is a live recording from 1965, a year before Mississippi John Hurt died. The sound quality is very good and if it wasn't for the occasional talking and polite applause, you could forget it was from a concert. I wanted to hear more from John Hurt after hearing his Spikedriver Blues on a documentary about American roots music. Spikedriver Blues is another variant on John Henry, much recorded by folk and bluegrass bands. I recognised it from a version by the Black Twig Pickers, one of my favourite bands. I also recognised the name John Hurt from John Faheys references to him (he recorded an album, Requia, in memory of him). I would recommend Mississippi John Hurt to all lovers of fingerpicked guitar, and in particular fans of John Fahey and John Renbourn. The songs are very pleasant and unchallenging, with a mellow unfussy pace. There are probably better places to start than this CD. I got a mega 10CD set called Diggin' Deeper - 200 Legendary Blues Treasures, which has 10 tracks by him. I think they are from his original 1928 recordings. Although there's is little difference between the 1965 live recording and this show, i preferred the sound of the earlier recordings. This CD was a bargain at £2.50 (inc postage).Read full review
As always the music by Mississippi John Hurt is excellent, but this recording has obviously been taken from a worn record and this distracts from the music.
