Brand X were a prog/jazz rock band featuring Phil Collins of Genesis who had about the same time just stepped into Peter Gabriel's shoes as lead vocalist as well as drums after the latter had quit Genesis in 1975 to go solo. Collins was a member of Brand X for 5 years and his drumming skills show up well on this album - and the others with this band. His drumming is very ferocious during much of the album though ironically it very much takes a back seat for his two own compositions Why Should I Lend You Mine and Maybe I'll Lend You Mine After All - two excellent pieces of laid back, earthy Pink Floydian instrumentals. In fact the other three musicians - guitarist John Goodsall, bassist Percy Jones and keys man Robin Lumley are all excellent musicians each writing two tunes each except Goodsall who wrote three. Jones's bass particularly dominates Malaga Virgen and Lumley is also brilliant on Disco Suicide. My favourite tracks though are the aforementioned Collins penned instrumentals and Goodsall's Hate Zone and especially the album closer Macrocosm - on both his guitar playing makes both tracks rock really hard even though the album represents the jazzier side of prog rock but they all do it so well. Yet another one of prog rocks might have beens who really should have been. Read full review

The second Brand X LP but the first I ever listened to and owned, and still my favourite. Wonderful to work to, atmospheric, dynamic, beautifully textural, not easily definable but certainly leaning toward Weather Report. Phil Collins demonstrates his customary percussive genius along with some deliciously dreamy vocals. If you love 70s Jazz-rock and/or enjoy the varied work of the Genesis crew from the 1970s, consider this cd for your collection. It's one of those recordings I regularly return to. Listen with the lights down low, chill and enjoy!
