Action thriller, where hit-men try to kill murder witness Anne Archer on a long-haul train ride. Gene Hackman is the low-ranking DA, who tries to keep her alive, and to persuade her to testify. Compared to the 1952 noir classic, this version has great Candian Rockies scenery in vivid colour, higher-powered acting and greater depth of character. Critically, we are made to care more for M Emmet Walsh's cop, whose murder provides Hackman with his strongest argument for Archer to testify. The big budget action cuts both ways. On the one hand, it is superficially entertaining. On the other, it loses some of the claustrophobic element inate to train thrillers, which helped raise the 1952 version to classic status. Nonetheless, high value entertainment.
