The early versions of this lens were not up to the usual standard expected of a Nikon lens. However, there were several modifications made to the design and glass used by the introduction of the AI/Ais versions. These are up to Nikon standard for a zoom. My version gives sharp images and good colour rendition and has the look and feel of a Nikon.

If the writing on the lens is inside the filter element (as in this photo) the lens is the older version. I have used the original version 43-86 before and they can be excellent for creative lens flare effects.

This is the later version of this lens and it is vastly under rated. I bought this to use with a film camera although I will give it a try on my D300, for portraits and general people pictures as a mid length zoom with the smaller sensor. This lens is much maligned which is due to the poor reputation of the earlier version. It was re designed and loads better. However it is not the lens that makes a great photographer. How many great photographers have obsessed about lens sharpness? Also, how many iconic photographs are pin sharp? My advice is to get one of these lenses and enjoy being creative with it.It is a great lens for the price they sell for. All zooms are a compromise and this is no exception. What is exceptional though is its colour rendition.... I love that! Build quality is everything you would expect from a classic Nikon. Perfectly dampened focus and zoom action, plenty of heft and glass that looks liquid. Enjoy!Read full review
