I have the Nikon D5300 as my main camera with wide-angle zoom, prime, and telephoto zoom. So I wanted a smaller camera that had the same battery/charger that I could take with me when travelling light. It also has a swivel screen and is perfect for macro shots. Also, in the special effects mode, it has some fantastic black & white options that really remind me of my film shooting days - just an added bonus in a compact camera with an already great feature set. If you can get one then snap it up. Recommended.

In my latter years the D300 + lenses was getting heavy so decided to go down in size Chose the P7800 with its 28-200mm Lens it produces excellent results with plenty of self control available and the video is a xtra bonus even the Digital Zoom produces Sharp results. A superb piece of kit. Highly Recommend it

Super quality, great images, great versatility. Gives performance of DSLR without the weight and need to carry bulky additional lenses. Have owned two of this model before which I sold and always regretted. This one is my keeper which I would never sell. Brilliant on all levels

A fantastic little camera for it's age, perfect if you don't want to lug around a big SLR.

I bought this to replace the P7100 - a camera which served well and reliably for at least 3 years. The P7800 has just been delivered and is an improvement in many ways; the hinged screen being the obvious one. There are many reviews of this online from professional assessors on both sides of the Atlantic - all worth reading as I'm not really impartial (having spent the money and unlikely to admit I could have done better!). The Nikon won - despite similar and higher spec from Sony, Canon, Lumix et al - because of the exterior mic. socket. Tempted hugely by the Canon G1X MkII, no external mic. socket. Sony Alpha A6000 shows better image quality, better zoom, higher res., longer battery life, inter-changeable lenses and more - but I need really good sound quality to add to the video inserts for the website and for work with tie-clip mics. The Canon and the Sony cost more, justifiably for their spec, but that socket is silly omission. Minor irritation (compared to the enormously practical P7100) is the detachable lens cap. The P7800 is still a superb piece of kit to carry in a big pocket or ready to shoot straight from a belt pouch, but that lens cap is going to get unclipped way too often so it will need a secure fastening. The P7100's lens cap was integral with the power switch. A small price to pay for the facility to fit filters though. Cameras are like cars, clothes and computers - WAY more choice than anyone has time to judge accurately because there's always a new one, or a modification to improve an existing specimen cost-effectively. I still feel Nikon has the edge in the high-end compact market for overall performance, practicality, reliability and value. Either the Canon or the Sony above WOULD have lured this Nikon faithful (since before digital cameras existed) but not without a 3.5mm mic. socket they won't.Read full review
