I have used this lens for just a handful of pictures so far. I'm having to get used to manual focussing again so I find the focussing ring a little unnatural to use as it is at the front of the lens. I would prefer it to be near the camera body. The zoom ring was a little stiff at first but it seems to be getting looser the more I use it. The images i have taken were both outdoor and indoor and I am pleased with the results given that I am using an entry level DSLR with a basic zoom lens. Overall, the lens is good value for money and if it wasn't for the slightly stiff zoom ring and position of the focus ring, I would have given it 5 stars.

Shame it won't work on auto focus, but I knew that before purchase.

This is an excellent lens, in my non-pro opinion. Yes, it is manual focus only on a D3100, and many other Nikon DSLRs, but the focusing is very easy to get right, even at full 300mm telephoto, and even with my less than steady hands it gives great results. Most other camera-based functions seem to work, including the shake-reduction setting, but frankly you don't need to use that. At ISO 200 and any shutter speed above 1/250 I managed to get very sharp results, even handheld. OK, taking pictures of birds a long way away against the sky, yes, there is some chromatic bleed, but for £69.99, which is what I paid for mine, this is still a no-brainer. The photo is taken of the War Memorial at Ham Hill, Somerset, at full 300mm at 1/640, ISO 200, f6.3, and, yes, zoom in and you can read the writing very clearly.Read full review

The benefit on this lens is that it has a great zoom with auto or manual focus. There is no VR and it can focus from 1.5m and above. Great lens, to use for outdoors with a polarizer filter, for beginners that seek good quality for low cost lens. It is recommended to use a tripod for the camera to get sharper images, although the lens does not need a tripod cause is lightweight.

I bought this 70-300mm lens for my Nikon D600, it’s a lovely piece of kit well worth the money, focuses really well, like the solid feel of the lens, can see me using it for a long time.
