A lump of a lens and built to withstand everything you could throw at it. Not the fastest AF you’ll ever come across but still very good for AF-D lens. Sports or fast moving subjects may be an issue but otherwise this is a very capable, built to last offering made better with great used deal prices.

This is an excellent lens for the money. It is a good size and fairly light for a telephoto lens. After comparing images l find this lens sharper than my Sigma 50-500mm O/S but not the Nikon 300mm F4. The lens is also slower at focussing than the other 2 lenses. Provided the light is good this is not so much of an issue but it would struggle in low light situations. So for fast moving subjects you would need a faster lens. Provided you work around its short comings it would make a good all round lens.
I purchased the lens in order that I may photograph wild life. The lens performs excellently!!! I highly recommend this lens, the build quality is very robust and very functional, it is an excellent addition to my lens options.

This is one of those lenses that gets mixed reviews. I've found the 80-400mm was not built for fast action photography since it lacks AF-S capability but this lens is great for general use. If you want a convenient walk-around telephoto lens that will occasionally deal with fast-moving objects in good light, the Nikon VR 80-400mm is a great choice.

Sharp, good IQ but very heavy and bulky. Overpriced. Needs tripod to get the best out of it.
