Leary catapulted himself into TV and film from a small studio, ranting into a mic about death, cancer, exercise, bad music and drugs. Bill Hicks fans will see a lot of his material here - but put together in a coherent, non stop (rehearsed) flow which comes across like an evangelical speech, or political oratory (in direct contrast to Hicks' anti-comedy, ad hoc, anti-audience delivery). How much is persona, how much Leary, is hard to tell from this performance, but later work suggests a Democrat lurking beneath the Neo Con bluster - but the real joy here is the use of language, the slaying of Liberal sacred cows, and the endless supply of memorable lines. A standup masterclass.
I bought this CD for the first track, which is the song "A$$hole". You may recognise this track from an advertising campaign a few years back against drink driving which was very effective at the time. A great song, with a further 3 songs at the end of the CD also. The rest of the CD is all spoken word and largely centers with the fact he likes to smoke cigarettes, which is ironic in light of todays changing laws, smokers will certianly love his points of view... A$$hole is still a classic.. and the CD is worth it for that track alone...
When I first reviewed this I made a robust reposte to this guy who essentially acts out a fair bit of Bill Hicks, reason I'm revising is that when I wrote it I was new to the WEB and didn't realise there was a sizeably sinister cult of Hicks fanboys who see him as an almost religious diety,as opposed to myself who he thinks he was a very witty human being who died annoyingly, sorry, tragically young,he was on a mission, not the messiah, infact, you could say he was a really naughty boy,Leary was naughty though for shamelessly trying to emulate Hick's "bad boy"image, and it is shameless and actually quite cringe worthy. There are many differences however,Leary steers clear of anything that is actually controversial and merely mimics Hick's don't give a f*** attitude, whereas Hicks spoke frankly and honestly, with Leary you are left in no doubt that his act is just that,an act.So my advice would be go on Youtube and watch the clip comparisons that are provided by the seemingly endless army of rabid fans,on both sides, but in particular Hicks descipeles,of the debate and wonder why it should really matter...Read full review
Didn't care for the musical part of the CD but the rest is Funny. I only have heard this one CD from Dennis Leary so I have no others to compare it to.
Reasonable. If you like Bill Hicks, whose style was magnificently nasty, this is similar, just not quite as good.
