Released in 2000, I can't believe it's taken me 7 years to even be aware of this release - such is the fall from grace of Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. However, having seen the band live in May (London) and June (Cambridge) my own personal love for the band has diminished not one jot. Anyway memories stirred I found details of this release and quickly sourced eBay for a copy at a reasonable price. Not a problem and within a few days archive memories were spinning in the CD player. So what have we got here? 15 tracks scanning the period 1979-1983 and recordings from 4 “Peel” sessions. Recorded 20th August 1979 we get Bunker Soldiers, Julia’s Song (one of my all time personal favourites), a “slow” version of Messages and the simply fantastic Red Frame/White Light. Recorded 14th April 1980 we get Pretending To See The Future, Enola Gay, Dancing (as bizarre as ever) and Motion And Heart, which kicks off with a rather nostalgic feel. Recorded 29th September 1980 we get Annex, The Misunderstanding and The More I See You. Recorded 29th January 1983 we get Genetic Engineering, Of All The Things We’ve Made and ABS Auto-Industry from the “Dazzle Ships” era. The CD closes with a "bonus” track in that of the original version of Electricity – i.e. not that which eventually became the single. So who is going to buy this CD? Die-hard fans like me obviously but I would recommend strongly to anyone who is unsure of the “early” OMD years - i.e. that before the hits started rolling. This is early 80’s synth pop at its finest.Read full review
I decided to buy this album to add to my collection of OMD music. I love OMD and this album is definately one for the hard core fan as it's somewhat mellowed down versions may not inspire the new listener. Having said that I played it to my other half (who isn't an avid fan) and she enjoyed it very much. For the price i payed for it, it was well worth the spondulies.
