I bought the KR camera for my wife as an introduction to Digital SLR and it is so easy to use and takes great pictures. The camera has features that rival the top brands at an affordable price for amateurs photographers. There are great features - The image stabilisation is great, built in filter are fun and plenty of modes including manual for taking pictures in various situations. Great detail in the pictures and if you want the camera will do a lot of the work for you. Great auto focusing especially pleased with the macro close ups. Do buy the AA battery holder to make it more versatile if you plan to take lots of pics in one go. Definitely would buy another one and delighted to recommend.
The camera is definately more difficult to work than a normal digital camera as you have to use the eye piece to view and set your picture. This leads to you having to spend more time on setting up the picture. However saying that it is a fantastic camera that gives great pictures once you play about with it and find out the different settings. I have had fun working out how to use it properly. It gives a more professional picture and automatically turn your long pictures into the correct way up for easy viewing. I still have to use the video section but am sure it will work just as well as the pictures. I think it is great value for money as long as you are happy to spend a bit of time learning its workings. I had a pentax as my last camera and this one gives even better pictures. I didn't realise, when buying the camera, that I had to use the eye piece and wasn't sure if I would like it but now I am delighted that I spent the time learning how to use it rather than swap it for one that shows the picture on the viewscreen. It makes me feel that I have 'earned' the good pictures through my own efforts.Read full review
Having spent some years using a couple of Fuji bridge cameras I wanted some greater flexibility . Why did I choose the Kr over other options? AA Battery Option / In Camera Image Stabilisation / Vast Range of Own Brand and 3rd Party Lenses nicely Supported /Standard Hotshoe Fitting . I wanted to be able to use higher ISO settings without the image dissolving into mush as it tends to on the small sensor bridge cameras. The Kr delivers good image quality over a wide range of ISO settings . The size of the camera is similar to the larger bridge camera I own ( Fuji s6500 ), but it's a little heavier . (It's clearly a lot bigger than a compact . But the big sensor is the main factor in giving better higher ISO performance !). The performance of the kit lens is fine . The zoom range is not as great as the bridge cameras or many compacts but is typical for lens supplied with a DSLR . The wide angle setting is great for indoor shooting. Of course you can always fit another lens if you wish and theres plenty of old and new(er) glass to choose from .If it's a mechanical fit to the pentax k mount you should be able to use it ( Some other brands seem to require the use of a third party adapter chip / pcb to be added to allow the use of older lenses ).The features you get will depend on those of the lens-The manual covers this quite well but a little practice will be required. Old manual lenses will require 'Using Aperture Ring' to be set - Search the PDF of the manual !. Image Stabilisation: It's in the camera -'Sensor Stabilised'- So it works with any lens you fit . To get the best from it with older lenses you need to input the focal length ( Yep this one is well in the Menu system ) .It's an electromagnetic system which is a bit noisy ( buzzy ) if on in live view. Live View works well - you can manually zoom in for fine focus and pan round with the 4 way controller if you need . Power - I don't like cameras that ONLY allow you to use a dedicated battery . The Kr allows the uses of AA's (With an optional holder) Which helps keep the shooting options open - My camera came with genuine item (The genuine pentax item is expensive for what it is but there are reasonably priced chinese sourced clones) . Compatible dedicated batterys are also readily available. (The main advantage of the dedicated battery is that it is smaller - about the same as 2 x AA's). The viewfinder is nice and clear with a good range of adjustment for eyesight . The various settings are clearly displayed below the image .The autofocus works well - the focus point is shown as a flash of red in the viewfinder . The same focus indication also given even with an old manual focus lens. The LCD is clear and bright - Excellent resolution (It's fixed but for me in many that's a plus ) . The User Interface is really clear - All the daily use stuff is really done from the Mode knob/E-Dial ( the +/- button depending on Mode ) and the 4 way controller ( eg ISO ) The setting changes are clearly shown in the viewfinder or on the rear LCD . The Menu system allows lots of options and settings but the stuff you need to get at to change on a picture to picture basis are readily accesible. The one thing I don't like is the 'Flash Up' button is also used as the 'Delete' button when in 'Review' mode. And though Pentax no longer promote it the camera will support tethered shooting with suitable PC software.Read full review

Great camera, value, blows competition away with features, clarity and add-ons. Well done with the K-r Pentax!
