A costume drama with some first world war action and a very subdued love story. Cumberbatch is as good in this as he has been in any of his other roles. The story explores the changes in society and how they effect a man raised as landed gentry and his determination to continue living up to the moral standards of his generation.

Madame Bovary caused huge controversy when it was first published although it is hardly shocking by modern standards. This is the third adaptation of the book I have seen and it is fairly close to the novel, slightly shabby in places and full of the force of middle class morality The BBC have a good reputation for bringing historical works to life and this one won't disappoint.

I have just finished watching this as an escape from political gloom and despondency, though there was plenty of that in this production. Nevertheless it was very immersive and boasted a superb cast who transformed rather a stodgy novel into a fast paced film
