Not a bad amp, lacks a bit of power, bought as this one is more desirable for upgrade to the full monty via Tom Evans which is the sole purpose of my intentions, as standard I would say it is better with CD's as opposed to vinyl, it does lack a lot of poke in this department, all in all a decent amp but incredible, upgraded if you wish to throw £ 850 at it and let Tom have his wicked way.

I have one of these. I bought a mint ‘standard’ A300R Precision and sent it to Tom Evans to upgrade it to a ‘Full Monty’. Cost me £700 for the upgrade. The result is truly stunning. It’s got a massive amount of grunt even tho it’s only 35 WPC. I read a comment an a Hi Fi forum from a guy who had a Pathos Logo amp (£3000) and a ‘Full Monty’ and he said the little Pioneer gave it a run for its money!

I have had Pioneer A400 but to my ears this sounds much more pleasing and relaxing as Pioneer A400 is too much in your face. Pioneer A-300r seems to create a much bigger and wider scale so therefore sounds really good at even low levels!

I was looking to replace an old NAD 3020 and had decided on an A400 but was unable to find one for the price I wanted to pay, I then came across an ad for the A300R at a reasonable price and took a gamble on it. You will find reviews saying that these amps are very bright sounding, don't let that put you off they are very detailed but in no way bright or tinny. I would say it is just as warm and musical as my old NAD but with a far more detailed sound. If you are concerned by the measly sounding 35w output don't be, it has more than enough power for normal home listening, I haven't had the volume past "12 o clock" and that was damned loud, for normal listening I usually have the volume around the "7-8 o clock" position. It seems perfectly happy with difficult speaker loads too, my Epos speakers are rated at 4ohms and the A300 drives them with ease right up to unreasonable volumes. So don't pay £50 more for the A400, all you get is an extra 5w that you won't need unless you're trying to recreate a Megadeth gig in your living room.Read full review
