Great album with catchy base riffs. First heard Public Image Ltd in the mid 80's, but it wasn't available in the country I was residing in at the time. A post punk, hypnotic, dark rock genre, the first three tracks are truly awesome, 'Death disco', aptly renamed 'Swan lake', must be the best song on the CD. John Lydons vocals I found appealing, the screeching guitar & melodic base are superb. I loved it, however, my partner didn't! Still, definitely one for the collection! Big thanks to Badlands in Cheltenham. Cheers
I recently got best of PIL on tape and had no idea they were this good having only heard various singles. I have always been aware of metal box "THE ALBUM" but never the actual type of music on it. I was pleased to find a whole load of dub and post punk reference. "Metal" is a good word to describe the mood here too. Jagged sparse, cold and hard in both lyrics and music. All this personal bitterness comes out through Lydons toasting rant style over repetive jarring riffs. Track wise "Poptones" I like for the arrangement and the fact that Alan McGee, late founder of Creation records, named his new lable after the track. Opener "Albatross" is another favourite, people say the 10 min track length is excessive, i find it brave and wonderfully indulgent, in a true dub style. The legacy of this justified classic carries on in modern bands today, liquid liquid and the rapture to name two obvious ones. I still have more to learn from this album and will be listning to it for some time, hope the box doesn't rust................Read full review
Great way of listening to the 12 tracks all at once;the original three 12inch discs had to be changed and turned.Great production and sound Metal Box is strange and diverse and quality oozzes throughout with Johnny Lydons unique quirky lyrics
