A bird book for both novice and expert alike ! Very comprehensive, with clear, detailed photos rather than illustrations and with each bird/species having a separate page for itself there's no shortage of information provided. The book is A5 sized and the layout is both logical and intuitive even for someone with no previous birding experience. This definitely is a reference book to enjoy curled up by the fire, with excellent colour reproduction and interesting descriptions. I'd be very reluctant to take this out in the field on a wet, damp day preferring to "sacrifice! something a little bit slimmer or less impressive. Plus, there's quite a bit of weight behind this small volume indicating both quantity (almost 500 pages) and quality (glossy pages). The only concern I have relates to the spine. I don't know how these things are produced but whenever I randomly open a page I get the impression that if I were to do it frequently on the same page then the page itself may come loose. I hope I'm wrong as loose leaves would really spoil the book, but for now I'm opening and turning pages with care. That aside, this is an excellent reference book for the price but if you can shop around and get it for anything less than RRP you'll be even more chuffed !Read full review

Great clear pictures. Particularly like the sections on 'birds you might mistake this one for' very helpful.
