This wonderful debut album from shoe-factory-worker turned folk singer Ray Lamontagne features songs that all draw on deep wells of emotion, and with his unique sandpapery husky voice, they seem to belie his years. The title tune is an instant classic - sparse and maudlin (in the best sense), and songs like "Narrow Escape" a ragged, episodic waltz, are equally impressive, with careful, cinematic lyrics that tell believable stories of wounded-hearted refugees on the road of life and love. Most of the tracks fall into a midtempo shuffle rhythm, so the lyrics carry a lot in order to avert a sort of dull sameness. The sound is measured and sparse, with few frills (a five-piece string section is used on a few tracks, but is never intrusive), all of which supports the emotional urgency of LaMontagne's writing. The most stunning track on the album is left until last being the sombre sad lullaby "All The Wild Horses" and this album is worth getting just for that song alone - even though the song itself is painfully short at just over three minutes. Still, this is a beautiful debut album without being drepressing that puts the likes of Damien Rice in the shade.Read full review
there is no possible reason why anyone wouln't like this album , his beautifull soul full voice seems to suround you at point's haunting then uplifting each song complments the next but it is not a one track album every song is credible in it's own right he has subsiquently released 2 more albums " till the sun turns black" and his newest album "gossip in the grain" but for me "trouble" has to be in my top 10 favorite albums of all time
Beautiful album by a true and talented artist! Lovely lyrics! A must for all! Heard and owned this cd many years ago but got lost in a relationship break up, so i'm very pleased to be re united with the delightful sounds of Ray LaMontagne. Trouble just starts this album off so well, the rest of the cd follows suit and does not disappoint.
