I bought this DVD for 2 reasons: Ray Charles's voice was part of the musical background when I was growing up in the late 50s and early 60s and I knew his most successful records well, but knew very little about the singer other than that he was blind. My other reason was that my pen-friend on Florida's Death Row had seen this movie on TV and loved it, and I like to discuss books and films with him. I was not disappointed. The story was gripping, the actors were excellent; particularly the actors playing Ray Charles both as a child and as an adult. I had known nothing of Charles's drug addiction or his, eventually, successful attempts to overcome this, which was sympathetically portrayed. An entertaining and moving film, higly recommended.
A biopic of legendary soul and R n'B singer Ray Charles, which details his rise to fame in the 1950s and '60s. Growing up poor, black, and blind in the rural south, Charles learns under the tutelage of his tough-love mother to turn these handicaps into assets. With this training, Ray eventually plays his way into a major deal with Atlantic records and earns icon status as an American legend. Along the way, the high cost of fame leads him to engage in abusive relationships, manipulative behaviour, and struggles with drug and alcohol problems. If you enjoy a true movie this is well worth a watch! A+++++
Great movie, a bit long though. You may find some of the drug scenes abit close to the bone though. Depends, each to their own. Overall a very good biopic
This film is fantastic, and a must for anyone interested in the music industry. It shows you the pitfalls and joys of music and how it can effect people. A touching moving film a definate must see
