When I moved up to a Comprehensive school more years ago than I care to remember, my love of classical music grew at an alarming rate; particularly light music and particularly Eric Coates. This stuff was true 'easy listening' the suites - london, london Again, From Meadow to Mayfair, the list is long and distinguished. This was music you could relax with and really enjoy without great effort. I've been able to build on my CD collection with lots of my favourites from those adolescent years and this CD has become one of my most favourite. This Naxos release features the Royal Artillery Band giving a stirling performance of many of Coates' Marches and these are well known tunes that lend themselves well to brass band recital giving a very military flavour. A great deal of Eric Coates compositions were used throughout World War Two as signature tunes for radio programmes and were undeniably a great morale booster. I'm sure a great many grandparents today will remember these tunes with great affection and more than a little nostalgia. Those younger lovers of good music amongst us will enjoy them for what they are: lively, original, striking, colourful and very, very British, executed with crisp military precision. There are scant recordings of his music by Brass or Military band, this one is excellent.Read full review
