I've owned and used this camcorder since 2003. I use mine for outdoors activities where I need telephoto zoom, nightwork, YouTubing indoors with studio lighting and referencing building work I do. The tape cassette loads from above and doesn't interfere with tripod mounting (as some others do). You want a 3.5mm jack plug to 3 RCA cable for transfers. Even today (09-Jan-21), I'm STILL using it despite having 1080p digital on my smartphone. Why? ADVANTAGES: 1) Optical zoom has a very decent, wide range. 2) I don't use digital zoom but that is incredible. At 60 metres, a Swan Vesta matchbox will completely fill the screen. At that magnification, you'll need a heavy, professional grade tripod. 3) You have options for date and/or time which is invaluable for record shots. 4) Reliability: in 17 years of using it, it's still going strong. I've carried it in my rucksack when rockclimbing, abseiled with it, etc. No issues. 5) Night use - it records under street lighting or moonlight with more detail than I can get with any other motion picture device. 6) No need for a separate charger: switch it off with battery fitted and connect it to the mains. 7) It has a heapload of features (I don't use them but many do). 8) The counter can be reset, switched off and transfers can be made WITHOUT the text you'll see through the viewfinder. DISADVANTAGES: 1) SP mode ONLY - no LP recording or playback. 2) Uses video tape which is more delicate than media cards. 3) New batteries ARE available but shall have to come from overseas (if you're in the UK). 4) Footage has to be transfered to computer or DVDR or DVDRW. I use a DVD recorder that's connected to the TV. RECOMMENATIONS: Get the camcorder, Video8 cassettes and a spare battery. If you get a battery charger, you can recharge one battery as the other is being used.Read full review

Purchased as a back up to transfer 8mm tapes to DVD. Still unused. I have a couple more which are regularly used. This transfer is one of the service we regularly offer in our Digital Imaging shop. Back up accessories are getting difficult to obtain. Therefore repairs will be difficult. Would not recommend to purchase this type of product as tapes are virtually unobtainable at reasonable price
