First impressions - excellent. Being new to woodwork of any kind, this was my first item of heavy duty machinery, although in the world of lathes the mini lathe is a baby. At around 75 cm in length it’s the ideal size for the amateur woodworker/hobbyist in a garden shed. It will take up to 33 cm stock for turning. Made from cast iron its sturdy enough with only the control box being made of plastic. Sadly the instructions are poor but an evening on YouTube will help a lot! As you develop you will find you want to add attachments such as a chuck. (It comes with a dead centre and a live centre to get you started). A chuck or drill bit attachment will need to a 1MT fitting (Morse Taper size 1) commonly available. It also comes with a large back plate for bowl turning. It’s not a super powerful machine and is best suited for smaller items but much can be achieved with a good set of chisels and use of the variable speed control. A big plus for me was that it had a quiet motor so as to not annoy the neighbours. As with all machines, read the safety instructions. If you’re completely new to turning wood, start with something that’s already round like a section of broom handle before trying to make a rectangle into a cylinder.Read full review
