I bought this book after hearing Daisy Christodoulou on Radio 4. I thought a number of the ideas were in sync with my own experiences of teaching in state schools where the focus is on skills rather than knowledge - as if one can substitute the other. Knowledge is as important ever - if you know things you don't have to keep using 'skills' to find them out again. We are teaching students to have to relearn everything, rather than know and have the skills to learn new things that build on past experience. The book is very clearly laid out and whilst you are reading it does make complete sense. Also Ms Christodoulou has done a good deal of research and makes what I believe to be some correct inferences, where an explicit statement is absent i.e. What OFSTED are looking for in lessons. My only criticism, based on my personal preference rather than the content of the book, is that the main points could do with being summed up at the end of each chapter. Also be clear that this book is quite small so you can read it in a couple of days of casual reading. It is not War & Peace - that might not be good for some people. A great book that I have recommended to colleagues and lent to others. You can't say better than that.Read full review
