This is a book I read every year. It is the most compelling story, featuring India at its best and worst. The love story which very slowly develops and winds through the history of the Great Indian Mutiny is gentle and almost sneaks up on you. This book reflects the best of the British Raj and how some British people loved and revered India and deeply respected India and her people. Others who went to India because they would clearly have done no better by staying in Britain. It is a huge history of two peoples whose history is deeply intertwined, even to this day. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I was disappointed at how yellow the pages were and would not have bought it if I had known, as this is a book I had wanted to keep.

If you like romantic fiction beautifully written, historically accurate and grippingly readable, this is the one for you. Follow it up with Kaye's other India-based story 'The Far Pavilions'.
