This is a beautifully designed lens. It isn't exactly light for a fixed focal length type but it has a lovely feel. The image stabilisation system is the nicest I've seen, it operates very smoothly as does the focus/ autofocus. Other lenses in this sector don't even have a stabilisation system! Plus the fact that the front of the lens doesn't rotate when focusing is a really nice feature. It makes using a polarising filter easier, since they are effected by rotation.

This lens feels sturdy and well-built with all the features you could wish for in a macro lens: Focus limiter, optical image stabilization and fairly quick and silent autofocus. The most important part of a macro lens is the sharpness of the close-up pictures and this lens is definitely razor sharp. It focuses well albeit with a slight tendency to hunting at the closest distances, which does not matter too much to me as I tend to pre-focus the lens manually to its shortest distance and then move the camera until the object is in focus. The fairly long focal length means that you can keep a good distance to the object, which makes lighting it easier although I still find my ring flash a good help. I also use the lens for portraits where its big aperture and nine-bladed diaphragm creates a beautiful bokeh that helps create great pictures. This lens feels and handles just like the best prime lenses from companies like Nikon and Canon and I would not hesitate recommending it to anyone.Read full review

hello i have always been a bit weary of buying another sigma lens as back in the eighties they were cheap and tacky with poor results but as i could not justify spending £500 plus for a nikon i thought i would give them another chance what a relevation superb build and quality and sharp images to match i have since bought a 150 - 600 mm which is stunning please see my first atempt at macro below more at my flickr site stephenbottrill regards

Due to the design of this lens on a Nikon, f2.8 is only obtainable when infinity is used. Once you focus closer the aperture changes to f3.3, f4 or f5.6 due to the shift in the lens elements. Once you get your head around this factor the lens works well. Worked really well on a recent food shoot.

Although I've not had much time to do any serious work with this lens, I have taken a few test shots, all hand held at various settings, and I am very impressed with the sharpness achieved, especially at macro, which was my main reason for the purchase. The optical stabilisation works well and the auto focus also, but for macro, manual focus is preferred. This really is the norm for macro photography anyway so this is not a criticism. I would have no qualms in recommending this lens.
