There are compatibility issues with Canon 5D mk4 and some other canon bodies. You get rings on photos and video below aperture 2. The fix is by switching off lens correction. The lens is a good deal at an excellent price point. I have not tested it extensively but it really struggles on the auto focus system for videoes, nothing like Canon L lens--not even close. Not sure how sharp it is but I think at around 4 it is sharp. Nailing focus at 1.4 is so tricky hard to know if sharp or if I am missing. But after some more test I think it is pretty solid. it is just sometimes that focus can go crazy rattling and shaking. Build quality looks good. I mainly bought for low light work. Not sure how good it would be on a gimbal considering the focus issues. (hunting, making a lot of noise, etc).

Bought this lens mainly for getting sharp pictures with the aperture wide open and it certainly delivers in that respect, and the bokeh (background blur) is very, very smooth. Also by F2.8, pictures are incredibly sharp corner-to-corner all the way up to about F8. HOWEVER, those autofocus issues you hear about are true. My one front-focuses at close distances and it is noticable. Ways around this are to focus in live view, focus manually or buy an expensive camera with AF micro-adjust. Sigma will also fix it under warranty (or otherwise for a small fee) but I've heard of people having to send theirs multiple times before it being sorted out properly. Overall I'm still pretty pleased with this lens, would be 5/5 if not for that pesky autofocus!... Oh yeah and it's absolutely massive and looks a bit stupid on my EOS 600D (must be time to upgrade!).Read full review
Solid built and heavy this lens is very sharp indeed. Ideal for macro using tubes as plenty of light getting thru. Fantastic portraits on a crop camera. Focus not so fast as canon L lens but at 1/5 the price.

With 50mm lenses being a very popular option, there are so many options available now. I've been lucky to have owned several in my time, including the Canon 50mm f/1.2L. This Sigma is the second best I've used - 1st goes to the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art. The price - performance ratio, in my opinion, can't be beat. Really pleased with this lens and highly recommend it to anyone wanting a 'budget' 50.

Good value alternative to Canon's own macro lenses and very sharp.
