If you have a spare £800-£1000 to spend I would not hesitate to buy a Canon made lens but if like me you are restricted by your budget try out the Sigma it does the business. It is heavy to carry but I think anyone serious enough to want this lens would know that before they buy anyway - and isn't that a re-assuring point anyway. I purchased a monopod to use at the Zoo and out on my travels to keep pictures sharp and also 'stop down' or else you will get soft images at the far end of the zoom length. There does seem to be faint Vignetting so another reason to manually control the exposure. Overall a good lens and good price and provided you take into account short-comings a good buy I think.
This is an excellent lens on a budget, second hand ones can be found for around £300 for a good example. These lens do suffer from the paint flaking even when looked after as the bonding is not up to today's standards, having said that it doesn't make a difference to the optics, the OS is clunky but spot on as is the focus. With it being heavy like any other zoom of this type a gimble should be used if possible. I have take picture of moon handheld at 1/25 sec and it's come out really well, so if steady then do what you want.
